When I got a copy of "The Time Machine" in the Penguin Classics series, I was surprised at how short it was- more a novella than a novel. Of course, there were a lot of things that we now talk about openly (and portray in movies) that you couldn't talk about openly in 1895 (when the book was first published), and because of that a lot of the Eloi-Morlock relations had to be implied more than spoken aloud. So the screenwriters were trying to tell what Wells only suggested happened, and that's difficult.

That might've been what was going on. Whatever they were doing, Jeremy Irons did a good job in that role. For as much as I didn't care for the movie, I did enjoy his part in it.
