The best thing about this first movie is that it adheres to the classic view of futuristic robots, cold, callous machines that are bent on one objective
There is a basic problem in sending Kyle into the past to stop the Terminator. Suppose John and Kyle see the Terminator being sent into the past, and that they decide to send Kyle back to stop him. How much of a headstart does the Terminator have? Five minutes? Or 45 years? Because John and Kyle see the Terminator disappear into the past and yet nothing in their present has changed, they should realize the Terminator failed his mission and that their past was not changed.

That's a good point. At most they only would've had a few seconds to make a decision.
