This is why you can't trust ongoing story arcs in media to anyone except the people who devised them in the first place. I don't know how James Cameron feels about the later films in the series that he wasn't involved with, but I doubt he was pleased.
Why should Carl's power source explode if it didn't explode at the terminators in T1-T2? T3 is not a canon for DF. John is not needed without Skynet. No Skynet, no John. The adult John had no real backstory, we took Kyle Reese's word for it, and here we believe Grace.

I feel the same. A part of me hopes he could try to find a way to fix it, but at this point, I don't see how.
