This is the premise of at least two animated television programs I'm a fan of. In both cases, the robot protagonists struggle with reconciling their robotic identities and abilities with the emerging to desire to "fit in" with the humans around them by mimicking them. But this is not to gain or enhance sentience since they are both already sentient.
